Chiropractic & Children
actually occur while in-utero due to the many mental, chemical, and physical stressors that the mother experiences in her everyday life.
Subluxation patterns may also be passed down from the mother to the developing baby. Mothers with less nerve interference will give birth to babies with less nerve interference.
Let's look at the birthing process... babies have to adapt quickly to rapid changes, and if they are unable to adapt to these changes, it may be stored in their body as tension (i.e. subluxation).
Physically, babies experience a tremendous amount of trauma. Pulling, forcing, and twisting the baby from the birth canal are common stressors in birth, not to mention if a c-section, forceps, or vacuum extraction is required. Even in a natural home birth, the strain put on the baby’s system during the journey down the birth canal is enough to cause a subluxation as well.
Emotionally, the heart rate and stress hormones in the blood exceed those of an adult who is having a heart attack.
Chemically, there’s a challenge with oxygen when the baby goes from a fluid filled low oxygen environment to one with high oxygen levels.
More often than not, the subluxation is at the upper cervical area of the spine.
"Life for the newborn depends upon the preservation and healthy functioning of the brain stem and spinal cord at the level of the upper neck."
- Dr. Abraham Towbin, MD
The nerve that exits this area of the spine controls breathing, the heart, stomach, eyes, ears, nose, and many other organs. This interference may present with symptoms such as colic, colds, sleep issues, ear aches, acid reflux, asthma, allergies, ADHD, bedwetting, vision problems, constipation, indigestion, etc.
Not only do parents bring their children to a chiropractor for the above symptoms, but also to maximize their child's brain and nerve development, enhance their child's overall well-being, strengthen immunity, improve spinal posture, prevent scoliosis, improve their child's ability to focus and concentrate, assist with behavioral disorders, and much much more!
Did you know...
A child’s weight doubles by 6 months of age, and triples by 12 months of age?
A child will have increased its growth by at least 50% at 12 months of age?
A newborn brain weighs approximately 350 grams, and by the end of the first year it will triple its weight to over 1,000 grams?
Children are not merely “little people”. They are dynamic ever-changing beings that are constantly adapting to new environments as their immature nervous systems develop billions of new pathways. During the first eight years of life, they are programming their brains with trillions of pieces of information that will allow them to function at their optimum potential.
It has been reported that by the age of 3, your child will have fallen over 3,000 times. All the bumps, bruises, falls, and even rollercoaster rides throughout childhood can result in a subluxation, and the resulting interference may not appear until months or years later.
As a new parent, you have a lot to be concerned with: car seats, bottles, doctor's visits, bedding, diapers, and baby clothes are just a few of your top priorities. What about the integrity of your baby's nervous system? That is the responsibility of your chiropractor! It’s never too soon to introduce your children to chiropractic!
Several preliminary studies performed by researchers like Thomas Wood, MD have shown marked improvements in brain function following chiropractic care.
Other studies have shown improved mental abilities such as concentration, memory, attention span, and reasoning.
A study published in the Chiropractic Research Journal compared the health of 200 children under chiropractic care versus 200 children under conventional medical care. The chiropractic group had fewer ear infections, allergies, tonsillitis, and asthma.
A retrospective study performed by Dr. Froehle, and reported in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapies, showed a 43% decrease in ear infections with only 1 or 2 treatments. 93% of the cases studied showed a marked improvement in less time and with less medical intervention.
A study performed by N. Klougart of Anglo-European College of Chiropractic demonstrated that babies who experienced symptoms of infantile colic responded to spinal care within 5 days. The results, children only using chiropractic had an average of almost 3 hours less crying time, and thus less discomfort per day than the children on medication alone.
Why do children need chiropractic, you ask...
Well, most of the health problems you are facing as an adult stemmed from childhood.
Did you know that an estimated 60-90 lbs of force is used on an infant's neck during normal delivery?
And could it be possible that the infant has damage to his/her spine and nervous system?
Absolutely! And the first subluxation may
